Getting Around
The old town is car-free - reach the viewpoint on foot from the ferry landing, the Market Square or the Gosaumühle bus stop.
The nearest airports are Salzburg Airport (SZG), about 80 km / 1.5 hours by road, and Vienna International Airport (VIE), about 290 km / 3.5 hours. From either airport, take a train to Hallstatt via Attnang-Puchheim or Bad Ischl.
Drive to Hallstatt and leave your car in the public parking lots P1, P2 or P3 outside the town - the centre is car-free for visitors. From P1 Gosaumühle the viewpoint is only about a 5-minute walk along the lake; from P2/P3 walk about 15 minutes along the lakeside promenade.
Classic route: take bus 150 from Salzburg to Bad Ischl, change to the train to Hallstatt Bahnhof, then take the ferry (or walk) across the lake to the town dock. From the dock, walk north along the lake for about 5 minutes to reach the viewpoint.
Obertraun on the far shore is a good base: park there and cross to Hallstatt by ferry or local bus to avoid the busy parking lots in peak season.
The lakeside roads around Hallstatt are popular with cyclists. Once you enter the town, dismount and push your bike, as lanes are narrow and crowded with pedestrians.
